Since the CFP’s inception in 2014, the SEC has been the leader among all conferences with a total of 15 appearances. In the 2024 season, which was the first year of the 12-team playoff, both the SEC and Big Ten sent four teams apiece, the highest of any conference. Alabama leads all programs with eight CFP appearances, reaching the playoffs most recently in 2023, which was Nick Saban’s final season. The ACC’s Clemson follows closely with seven appearances.
The Big Ten is also a strong contender, trailing behind the SEC with a total of 12 CFP bids. Ohio State has earned six spots (including a championship win in 2024), while Michigan, the national champions of 2023, has made it to the playoff three times. The Big 12, led by Oklahoma with four appearances, has a total of seven berths. However, in 2024, only one Big 12 team, Arizona State, made the playoffs.
The ACC has contributed a total of nine teams to the Playoff. In 2024, two ACC teams participated, including first-time participant SMU, which joined the ACC last season.
